Our organization was started in the spring of 1984. The father of a student at Western Michigan University's approached her instructor, Gil Hutchings, stating that he wanted to improve his woodworking skills and with the thought Gil could give instructions to a group once a month. There were a couple of students, Ray Creager and another Ray (last name is lost), that had an interest also. These men invited friends, who also invited friends, some undergraduate students and some former students and also became involved. It grew to about twenty members and they met in the Woodworking Lab in Kohrman Hall at WMU. Officers were elected, dues were collected and some instructional VCR tapes purchased to be lent out to the members. There were about 60 members at the end of the 2015-2016 season. We usually meet at a members shop once a month, usually the second Tuesday, from September thru June with some of the meetings being a field trip.
